Work Placements in Waterford

Fiona Bachmann

I've got the chance to work at the Crystal Sports & Leisure Centre. It has got a gymnasium, a swimming pool, sports hall, spinning room, a cofé shop, education and conference rooms. My typical working day starts at 9am to 5pm. At 1pm I've got a one houre break.

If I'm working at the reception, I have to check in people, do phone calls, give informations, bock in swimming lessons or summer camp, sell drinks, swim hats or goggles. Otherwise I have to do cleaning stuff like hoovering, cleaning tables and the machines.

You want to get some souvenirs, jewellery or other Irish things, or even some Waterford crystals? You just have to go to Hibernian Gifts in Waterford to get it all and more! The staff is very friendly there and it is a privilege that I got a work placement there for a month. They also have some special things there: Maybe you want to know the history of your family’s name. Just go in there and they will look up at a computer for you and print it out. It is great! All the product in this shop are Irish. I do the regular things like cleaning up and pricing the items, but I really like it. It brings joy to my heart to see all the happy customers. If we get a delivery, I am going to help them to put it on the right place. A lot of tourist groups are coming to this gift shop and when you are not able to put the items in your luggage – we are shipping worldwide! So just come and see all the great items we have.

My typical work day starts at 09:00 and ends at 05:00. During my working day at the Treacys Hotel Waterford I spend the most time in the office and check some reservations, or put some new ones in the reception system.

One day I visit the Housekeeping department and was impressed how fast and exact the employees work.

My working day at the Little Explorers Montessori Daycare starts at 9 am. There are two groups of Children, the smaller ones (8 months – 2 years) and the bigger ones (3 years – 5 years). In the morning, I take care of the smaller kids. We play various games, singing songs like twinkle twinkle little star, going out for a walk with them or playing in the garden. During the midmorning, they get some snacks mostly fruits and water to drink, also the carers must change the nappies of the little ones. We give the kids their Lunch at 11.30 am and after that the kids start going to the sleeping room for a nap.  After that we usually go out with them and there we meet the taller children. We play ball, run around, see-saw ect. When there is time we clean the toys, chairs, floor … or do the washing up. I normally leave work at 3 pm.

I love working with the kids because every day is different. It’s varying for the simple reason that there are never the same children and they haven’t always the same mood.

And the the Team was very friendly I liked them andthey said to me that I am welcome all the time.

I enjoyed the time there.

I have the opportunity to work in the administration at Play Together Childcare near the centre of Waterford. I am working from 09:30 to 17:00, my break is from 12:30 to 13:30. My tasks are to arrange receipts by their month and date, I put the new children in the computer system or check their files if something is missing.  If my boss is not in the office and I am finished with my work I can take care of the children. At 10 o'clock I start my work at a mensshop called Tony Roche Menswear. It's located in the city centre and just opened 2 months ago. It has also a Cafe and a Barber in it. Furthermore there's also fashion for women upstairs. It's a quite cool shop for young and old people and my coworkers are  very nice and always help me if I need any help.

I have to tag new clothes and put them into the inventory when they are coming in. Of course I also have to give advice to my customers if they are not sure about their size or if the clothes fit on them. At 5 o'clock I am finished with work and my hostfather picks me  up to go home.

During our stay in Ireland, I had the chance to work at the Woodlands health & leisure club. It is a Wellness & Spa Hotel with a pool and a gym. I had to work from Monday to Friday from 9:15 to 15:00, with a 30 min break everyday.

My tasks were:

-to check the water of the pool and the jacuzzi

-to help at the reception

-to check and clean the gym & the changing rooms

-to re-rack weights

I would describe my job as a very relaxed one. I can recommend it to students who have a lot of patients, because there is not always  enough work and you might just have to take care of the pool and welcome costumers.

I am really thankful and glad that I had the opportunity to be a part of the Woodlands health & leisure club.

I did my 4 week internship at the Pallas Equestrian Centre in Woodstown, Waterford.

A typical workday started  at around 9 a.m. and ended at 4.30 p.m. when my hostfamily picked me up.

During the day I was mainly responsible for mucking out stables which also  includes providing the horses with fresh hay, shavings and feed. Furthermore we had to lead all the ponies to the walker every morning, let them do their "gymnastics" for about 15 minutes, and then walk them back to their stables. As I had no experience with horses before, this task really frightened me at first but as time went by I became more and more used to the horses and they even got used to me as well.

Being an equestrian worker is  actually a really hard job. You wouldn't realise it until you have lift a wheelbarrow that's filled up with 100 kg of horse poo.

Even though I'm really wrecked at the end of the

day I like my job here at Pallas.

Working in fresh air and being surrounded by animals is the best thing that could have happened to me.

I never really liked horses before and I was always very scared of them. But I do now believe that horses are really tranquil animals and that they have a very special bond with humans.

I work in the probably most known tourist attractio

in Waterford called Waterford Crystals. After seeing all the beautiful manufactorings and maybe going through the tour where you can see how those magnificent crystals are made you can relax in the restaurant of it.

My work is from 9.30 am to 5 pm and we have very delicious cakes and cookies. At first I started in the kitchen washing the dishes but after a couple of days I was helping out in the front. I am still not able to make those cappucinos because it requires skill and perfection to mix it with milk and still making it look good. Besides all of this it makes a lot of fun because the stuff is awesome and I enjoy every sweet I can eat because I love sweets!

Now I work in the office at Biocide ltd. My workday starts at 9am and ends at half past 4pm. Most of the time I have to search for things in the internet and write it down in a word document.

The Granary Cafe, is where I worked during our time in Waterford. The typical working day began at 9:00 and ended at 17:00. Immediately I felt very welcomed, because the staff there were friendly and sympathetic.

My mainly assignments there were to serve the customers. Furthermore, I had to generally clean and maintain the Granary Cafe, like cleaning the tables or mopping. I always had something to do, so I never was bored while working.

Furthermore, at the break I'm allowed to enjoy the lovely food at the Granary Cafe. A big benefit is that I can drink coffee whenever and as much as I want.

Working in a Cafe makes you very tired, because you are on your feet the whole day. I was always very tired in the evening, but all in all I really enjoyed my time at the Granary Cafe.
