Waterford (Port Láirge)

As today Waterford is administered separately, it was originally the capital of the same-named county "Waterford".

Waterford, which is situated in the South-East of Ireland, is not only the oldest city but also the fifth most popular city in the Rupublic of Ireland.

Compared to Dornbirn Waterford City is about 3 times smaller. However, there are various attractions and loads of unexpected surprises waiting for you.

The crystal city

A must see is probably the Waterford Crystal.  As it's name implies it's a manufactory  that has been crafting elegant crystal creations since 1783. A host of craftsmen, glass blowers, cutters and engravers still work in Waterford to this days. It is stated that every day, two tons of molten crystal are shaped into impossible and beautiful objects. For this reason Waterford has such a good reputation for artistry  around the whole globe.

Reginald's Tower

The Reginald's Tower which is Ireland's oldest civic building, has been in usage for various purposes and for many many centuries. It's an important landmark in Waterford and a reminder of Waterford's former medieval urban defence system.

It's named after Waterford's founder Ragnall and hosts beautifully wrought ancient metalwork, including the magnificent Kite Brooch, preserved through the ages. Furthermore a narrow spiral staircase leads to the top where one can have a great view over the whole city.

The medieval museum

I guess a medieval museum mustn't miss in an ancient city like Waterford.

The museum tells the story of life in the city during the era and incorporates several preserved medieval structures within its walls, not least the beautiful Choristers's Hall.

Waterford Walls

The Waterford Walls probably surprised us all the most.

It's a project that has been founded in 2015 by a small team to bring some much needed colour back to Waterford and give abandoned and vacant architecture new life.

The injection of colour and charm is down to "festival" organiser Edel Tobin and curartor Louise Flynn, with their extraordinary team who have single-handedly started a revolution in the county through the medium of graffiti, or more appropriately, street art. With great support from the community, businesses and Waterford Council, the project has seen twent derelict and vacant walls transformed over three days into an array of beautiful street art.

I love Waterford because everyone is friendly and I also found it a very good place to learn english as the accent is neutral.

I can't tell you how much I love Waterford. Even though it's has been only a few days since I came here it feels so much like home.
I already encountered loads of warmhearted and such friendly people here in Ireland.
My home is a bit remoted but i kinda enjoy the solitude and the mystical, yet astonishing atmosphere out here.
